SAT Essay-Is Learning It's Own Reward?

Common sense tells us that people tend to get along better with those who are like-minded, who think and act as they do. Many people, however, get along very well with people who are very different from them and may prefer to associate with thsoe whose views and actions are different from their own. In fact, some people even complain that they are bored and irritated by those who are too much like them.

THE ASSIGNMENT:

Do people tend to get along better with people who are very different from them or with those who are like them? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

MY ESSAY

I  do not believe it is wrong or harmful to motivate people to learn or achieve something by offering them a reward. When you offer someone a reward, they strive for the reward but they also learn at the same time.

First of all, people get excited when they are offered a reward. They learn easier and are more cheerful about the work that goes behind learning.

On top of that, people learn easier when they are in a good mood. When you visualize a reward, it is a happy thought to think about winning it. This can result in more motivation to study and push yourself.

Lastly, when people feel good about what they are doing, they tend to want to do more of it. Making learning a positive experience can lead to people thinking about learning as positive in general. When you see learning as a fun, positive experience, you look for new things to learn every day because it is fun!

  1. Bo Erik,

This is a fantastic SAT Essay. While SAT essays with over 400 words often score the highest (avg. 10-12), this is an example of quality writing that would make any English teacher proud. Keep up the great writing!
